This early silent film contains footage of the early years at Horseshoe. Featured are various programs, the brand new pool, the old camp road and the White House (headquarters and hospital.) The promotion ends with the retreat ceremony on today’s Athletic Field with the flag being lowered from Flag Pole Hill.

1934 Promotions
Display Details
This camp promotion was produced by Philadelphia Electric Company in 1934. Filmed by Jos. S. Webb and T. J. Price, it features a typical day in Camp Horseshoe. Many of the landmarks and traditions have endured and are main stays of camp life in the 21st century. The original 16 mm film had been transferred to VHS and that VHS was the source for this digital version. The film has been divided into nine parts for publishing in the HSRAA Online Museum.
This part contains footage of the morning ritual in the stockades beginning with reveille. Also featured is the Octoraro and Camp Director Thomas J. Price.

This part features scenes from the Allen Memorial Dining Hall and Kit Carson campsite among others.

In the third part you will see scenes of working on projects, Sherwood Forest stockades, Handicraft and the Bug House (the original Nature Lodge!)

The fourth segment includes first aid and signaling outside the White House, life saving at the pool, cooking and service projects.

Part 5 features learning skills such as cooking and woodworking.

The pool is featured in the sixth segment. Note that there was no fence around the pool in 1934. There was a buddy board, lifeguard stand, diving board and the mandatory shower before entering the pool. Diving from the side of the pool was not forbidden.

Part 7 captures the camp fashion show.

The eighth segment has some more nature activity and competion on the Athletic Field including races and archery.

The final segment shows the Retreat Ceremony on the Athletic Field with a clear view to Flag Pole Hill. At the end is footage of ‘Ralph Blakeslee leading an expedition to locate a famous Indian mound’.
