This article by J. B. Rettew first appeared in the March 2004 issue of the HSRAA newsletter, The Octoraro Loop.

For many years after Scout troop camping was developed at Camp Jubilee, the camp has attracted devoted troops to enjoy a different style program than that offered at Camp Horseshoe. Troops like Oxford Troop 44, led by Bill Robertson and now his son Bruce; Troop 22 of Unionville with leaders like Carl Buffington, Chuck Kelly, Harry Alberts and John McCabe; Hopewell Troop 8 now lead by ‘Coop’ Cooper; Troop 45 of Devon lead by Dick Miller and Mike Langdon; Berwyn Troop 121 (now lapsed) lead by Al Brawn; all of whom staunchly supported the Jubilee program as did other devotees like Troops 51, 222, among others.

In 1985, the 75th anniversary of the BSA, Camp Jubilee was renamed Camp John H. Ware 3rd honoring an active Council Scouter and prominent Senator in Chester County from Oxford.

Over the past 25 years Camp Jubilee – John H. Ware 3rd leaders have figured strongly in the development of the camp’s program and the variety of offerings to both Boy Scout and Cub Scout units. Ray Pawley was an early director, followed by Rob McCarter, Matt Christenson, Dr. Dave Mellinger, Paul Owens, Fred Stoudt and the Bruton family (CW, Ben and Josh), Steve McCall-Carter, past leader Marjie Prosock and present day Jim Montich.

Unlike Horseshoe, the Ware program is multi-faceted and requires agility-cm the part of leaders and staff. During the summer, they plan and execute multifaceted programs that serve the needs of the Computer Camp, Science and Energy Camp, Handicapped Camporee, Scout Troops, Cub and Webelos camping, and Parent and Pal weekend activities.

Today, new challenges are on the horizon with the enhanced facilities involved with Cub Town and various program offerings in developing Cub and Webelos programs. Stay tuned for future reports in the Octoraro Loop.
