“Virtual reality, all the A.I. work we do, all the robotics work we do – we’re as close to realizing science fiction as it gets.”

This summer a new program was held at Camp Horseshoe, Robotics Summer Camp week. The new program was a collaboration between Chester County Council, FIRST Robotics PENN FTC, Scouting Robotics™ and the U.S. Navy. The program was open to any Scout or FIRST robotics student age 14-17.

Participants built a SeaPerch robot from scratch. SeaPerch introduces youth to basic engineering, design, and science concepts. As a fun hands-on project, SeaPerch engages students and fosters key 21st century skills including critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity.

At Camp Horseshoe, Rothrock Lodge was turned into a robotics lab with electronic parts soldering station, robot frame construction and underwater motor building. Participants each took a turn building individual parts and assembling the robot.

The building process met many requirements for four merit badges: Robotics, Electricity, Programing and Plumbing merit badges.

Instruction and building were completed mid-week and the robot was first tested Thursday in the camp pool. And of course, a thunderstorm delayed the process by over an hour. With component testing completed, the final assembly was completed.

The U.S. Navy loaned an underwater obstacle course and underwater tasks equipment. On Friday the participants each took turns as the SeaPerch ROV driver competing to complete the most tasks in the allotted time.

It was fun and engaging week for all who participated. Special thanks to Chris Lijoy, a FIRST Robotics volunteer, engineer and Eagle Scout who led the program.

Scouting Robotics™ is a new hybrid program under development using the methods of Scouting in FIRST robotics enabling character, leadership and technical development in youth.
