Exciting New Virtual Museum Features

New ways to explore, interactive games, personalized tours, and thousands of historical treasures at your fingertips!

The past month has been an exciting time for the Horseshoe Scout Reservation Alumni Association (HSRAA) Virtual Museum! We’ve introduced a wide variety of new features and enhancements designed to make exploring the rich history of Horseshoe Scout Reservation (HSR) easier, more entertaining, and more informative than ever before.

Since its creation in 2008, the Virtual Museum has grown into an extraordinary collection of nearly 15,000 historical artifacts, including photographs, videos, documents, memorabilia, and audio recordings. With six floors, 42 rooms, and nearly 300 exhibits, there’s plenty to explore. Our latest improvements make it even easier to discover the people, places, and traditions that have made Horseshoe and its camps so special.

Here’s a look at what’s new!

Explore the Museum with the New Interactive Navigator

One of our biggest additions is the HSRAA Virtual Museum Navigator, an interactive graphical map that brings back the look and feel of walking through a museum.

Rather than navigating through menus, visitors can now explore a six-floor museum featuring illustrated rooms and historical imagery. Select a floor, click a room, and see its available exhibits. You can jump directly to an exhibit or explore the museum one room at a time.

A special Whole Museum view provides a look at the entire six-floor structure, while a downloadable, two-page PDF offers a portable museum directory with clickable links to rooms and exhibits.

Look for the new map icon on the Virtual Museum homepage or in the Quick Tools menu to begin exploring!

Create Your Own Personalized Museum Tour

Our self-guided tours have long been a popular way to experience the museum, with themed journeys highlighting camp history, staff, memorabilia, Order of the Arrow traditions, and other topics.

Now, visitors can take their exploration a step further by creating custom museum tours tailored to their own interests.

Select the exhibits that interest you, arrange your own journey through the museum, and follow convenient navigation controls from one destination to the next. Custom tours can also be shared with others through a link, making them an excellent way to revisit favorite memories with former staff members, troopmates, and friends.

Of course, our established themed tours remain available for anyone who prefers a ready-made adventure.

Play Games and Test Your Horseshoe Knowledge

Who says history can’t be fun? Our expanded Quizzes and Games exhibit now features several interactive activities inspired by HSR history, traditions, and memorabilia.

New games include:

  • Timeline Challenge: Put historical Horseshoe events in the correct chronological order.
  • Memory Match: Match pairs of historical photographs, camp patches, memorabilia, and other artifacts.
  • Guess the Decade: Examine historical images and identify the decade in which they originated.
  • Word Scramble: Unscramble Horseshoe-related words using helpful clues.
  • Spot the Differences: Study historical photographs and discover subtle differences between two versions of an image.

These activities offer a fun challenge for Scouts, alumni, families, and anyone interested in discovering more about Horseshoe’s history.

Discover Recently Added Artifacts

With nearly 15,000 artifacts in the museum, finding newly contributed material hasn’t always been easy. That’s changed!

The Virtual Museum homepage now provides improved Recently Added displays for images, videos, and PDF documents.

Visitors can specify how many recent artifacts they want to see or search for material added within a selected number of days. Image previews include descriptive information, and links help visitors discover where an artifact appears within the museum.

Whether you’re looking for photographs from a recent camp event, a newly digitized historical newspaper article, or an old staff photograph, these features make it easier to keep up with our growing collection.

Better Photo Galleries and Historical Presentations

We’ve also introduced several improvements to the museum’s extensive photographic collections.

Many of our image galleries now feature enhanced slideshow controls, including adjustable playback speeds and several visual effects. Visitors can view historical photographs in black and white, apply a faded-print appearance, or experiment with a spotlight effect that emphasizes the subject of a photograph.

Improved captions, image titles, and direct links to artifact information make the galleries more informative and enjoyable.

These improvements are especially helpful when browsing the museum’s more than 1,300 image galleries, which preserve generations of Scouting memories.

Improved Navigation and Historical Information

Several smaller additions make exploring exhibits more convenient.

New Related Exhibits menus help visitors discover other exhibits within the same room, while Exhibit Info panels provide useful information about individual exhibits, including their content and the types of artifacts they contain.

An On This Day at HSR feature highlights historical events that occurred on the current calendar date, offering a new opportunity to discover interesting moments in reservation history.

We’ve also enhanced category filters for historical timelines and other displays, making it easier to focus on subjects such as buildings, staff, camp activities, Order of the Arrow events, and important milestones.

A Better Look at the Museum’s Collections

Visitors can now explore more detailed statistics about the Virtual Museum itself, including artifact totals, collection categories, historical years represented, and contributions from alumni.

New displays also distinguish artifacts associated with Camp Horseshoe, Camp John H. Ware 3rd, Camp Lafayette, and Camp Rothrock, recognizing the broader history of the reservation and its camps.

These improvements help demonstrate both the remarkable scope of our historical collection and the contributions of the many individuals who have helped preserve it.

Come Explore — and Help Us Preserve History!

All these improvements support the central mission of the HSRAA: to preserve and promote the spirit and heritage of Horseshoe Scout Reservation and its camps.

But the Virtual Museum will never truly be finished. Every photograph discovered, patch preserved, story remembered, and document digitized adds another piece to the story of Horseshoe.

We encourage everyone to explore the new features, try a game, create a personalized tour, and rediscover a favorite camp memory. And if you have photographs, memorabilia, documents, or stories that aren’t yet represented, please consider contributing them!
